Judge Orders Exelon to Divulge Radiation Data in Child Brain Cancer Lawsuit, AllGov ? News, -Noel Brinkerhoff, David Wallechinsky, September 03, 2011, Energy company Exelon has been ordered by a federal judge to turn over data regarding radiation leakage from one of its power plants.
?The demand came about after the parents of a girl sued Exelon claiming their daughter developed brain cancer as a result of living close to the Dresden Generating Station in northern Illinois.The judge?s ruling also involves Unitech Services Group, which had a nuclear facility, the Braidwood Generating Station, in the area. Braidwood is now also owned by Exelon.
Plaintiffs Joseph and Cynthia Sauer won access to more than a decade?s worth of data on Dresden?s discharge of radiation into nearby groundwater supplies.In 2001, the Sauer?s daughter, Sarah, then seven years old, was diagnosed with a medulloblastoma, a highly malignant brain tumor, about three years after the family moved to Grundy County.
The Sauers do not consider themselves anti-nuclear. ?I have no problem with any industry making a profit,? she has said, ?but the health of their profit margin should not come at the health of their neighbors.?
