Feds: Mass. man planned to blow up Pentagon (AP)

BOSTON ? A Massachusetts man was arrested Wednesday and accused of plotting an assault on the Pentagon and U.S. Capitol using remote-controlled aircraft armed with explosives ? the latest of several terrorism cases to spring from federal sting operations.

Rezwan Ferdaus was arrested in Framingham after undercover federal agents delivered materials he had allegedly requested, including grenades, six machine guns and what he believed was 24 pounds of C-4 explosive. Federal officials said the public was never in danger from the explosives, which it said were always under control and closely monitored.

Wednesday's arrest was similar to other cases in which reputed would-be terrorists were caught in sting operations that revolved around fictional plots against various targets, such as Dallas skyscapers or a Chicago nightclub. In this case, though, authorities say Ferdaus planned the scheme.

According to a federal affidavit, Ferdaus, 26, of Ashland, became convinced America was evil through jihadi websites and videos, and began planning "jihad" against the U.S. in early 2010. He contacted a federal informant that December and months later, allegedly began meeting to discuss the plot with undercover federal agents he believed were members of al-Qaida.

Ferdaus said he wanted to deal a psychological blow to the "enemies of Allah" by hitting the Pentagon, which he called "head and heart of the snake," according to the affidavit.

"Allah has given us the privilege," he allegedly told the informant. "... He punishes them by our hand. We're the ones."

Ferdaus, a U.S. citizen who graduated from Northeastern University with a bachelor's degree in physics, made a brief initial appearance Wednesday in federal court on charges of attempting to destroy federal buildings and providing support to a foreign terrorist organization, in this case al-Qaida. A detention hearing was scheduled for Monday.

Telephone messages were left at the office of his attorney, Catherine Byrne, and at the address listed for Ferdaus in the affidavit.

Several alleged domestic plots have been thwarted since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, including in Lackawanna, N.Y.; Portland, Ore.; and Virginia.

Terrorism arrests involving federal stings have often been followed by claims of entrapment, but none of the cases brought since Sept. 11 has been thrown out by a court on such grounds.

U.S. Rep. William Keating of Massachusetts, a member of the Homeland Security Committee, said lawmakers have been warned for months of an emerging threat from homegrown extremists. He said al- Qaida is casting a wide net to radicalize individuals or small groups already in the country because of the significant advantages.

"They're already here, so they don't have the hurdles of getting into the country, they know the country better. ... They know how to move around," Keating said. "The testimony we heard, things like this (the Ferdaus arrest) were inevitable."

Ferdaus is accused of planning to use three remote control airplanes measuring about from 60 to 80 inches in length. Ferdaus allegedly planned to pack five pounds of explosives in each plane, while saving some of it to blow up bridges near the Pentagon.

The planes, guided by GPS and capable of speeds greater than 100 mph, would hit the Pentagon and blow the Capitol dome to "smithereens," according to Ferdaus' plan, detailed in the affidavit. Ferdaus then planned a follow-up automatic weapons attack with six people divided into two teams, according to the affidavit.

At one point, according to recorded conversation detailed in the affidavit, Ferdaus told undercover agents that his desire to attack the United States was so strong, "I just can't stop. There is no other choice for me."

According to the affidavit, Ferdaus traveled to Washington in June to do surveillance, and drew up a 15-phase attack plan. He also allegedly rented storage space to work on the planes in Framingham, telling the manager he planned to use the space for music.

Asked at one point about possibly killing women and children, Ferdaus allegedly said all unbelievers of Islam were his enemies.

Prosecutors also accuse Ferdaus of supplying the undercover agents with cellphone devices he said could be used to remotely detonate explosives. When the undercover agents falsely told him the devices had been used to kill three U.S. soldiers in Iraq, he allegedly became visibly excited and said he felt "incredible. ... We're changing the world."

Rezwan is unmarried and has no children, the affidavit said.

He had at least one previous brush with the law. In 2003, The Boston Globe reported that he and two other Ashland High School seniors were accused in a vandalism spree at the school.

Top EU official seeks closer policy union (AP)

BRUSSELS ? A senior EU official called for closer political and financial unification in Europe, as fractures emerged Wednesday among leaders on how to solve Greece's debt crisis.

In a state of the union speech at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France, Jose Manuel Barroso, who heads the executive European Commission, came down firmly in favor of the 27-nation EU having a stronger central government.

"If we do not move forward with more unification, we will suffer more fragmentation," he said Wednesday. "I think this is going to be a baptism of fire for a whole generation."

Worries grew on Wednesday that cracks are reemerging within the eurozone over how to handle Greece's debt enormous debt burden.

A report in the Financial Times claimed as many as seven of the eurozone's 17 members want the banks to take a bigger hit on their Greek bond holdings. Citing unnamed senior European officials, the newspaper said Germany and the Netherlands are at the forefront of the calls for the private sector to take a bigger hit. France and the European Central Bank are said to be fiercely resisting the move.

"Today, we are facing the biggest challenges that this union has ever had to face throughout its history ? a financial crisis, an economic and social crisis, but also a crisis of confidence," Barroso said.

As well as facing a crisis in the eurozone, the wider EU is dealing with problems afflicting its borderless travel area that many observers say call for stronger central management of the union. More integration though would mean that member countries would lose some powers they have long considered part of national sovereignty.

Barroso also used his speech to back proposals for a tax on financial transactions, which he said could raise euro55 billion ($74.7 billion) a year.

Also Wednesday, the head of the European Central Bank told an Italian newspaper that governments should speed up their implementation of measures to fight the continent's debt crisis.

Jean-Claude Trichet's comments to Corriere della Sera came as lawmakers in Germany prepared to vote Thursday on measures that will give the 17 countries that use the euro more powers to fight a debt crisis that's already led to Greece, Ireland and Portugal to seek bailouts. Greece is lumbered with so much debt that many in the markets think it will have no option but to default.

The measures include giving the eurozone bailout fund the ability to buy government bonds, bail out banks, and lend to troubled governments quickly before they are in a full fledged crisis.

Finland's parliament approved the measures on Wednesday.

Trichet called on leaders "to demonstrate their sense of direction" and quickly put the new steps into effect.

Trichet said in an interview to be published later that "now is the time for effective action, implementation, verbal discipline and a stronger team spirit."

The measures being voted on were agreed by eurozone leaders on July 21, but the delay in implementing them has been one of the main reasons for the turmoil in financial markets over the past few weeks.

While waiting for approval of the July 21 agreements, the ECB has stepped in to buy government bonds and drive down borrowing costs for Italy and Spain.

Fears the eurozone's third and fourth largest economy may get sucked into Europe's debt crisis had stoked fears they would lose access to market funding and be forced into requesting bailouts, like Greece, Ireland and Portugal already have.

The ECB launched the purchases only reluctantly, and Trichet indicated he expected the bailout fund ? the European Financial Stability Facility ? to be in a position to take them over.

Still, the euro440 billion ($597 billion) available from the EFSF has not reassured markets; so far European leaders have resisted suggestions to increase its size.

Markets have also watched nervously as eurozone authorities pushed Greece to make more cutbacks to qualify for an installment of bailout money that is needed to keep the country from defaulting.

Greece's international debt inspectors will return to Athens on Thursday after they suspended their review of the country's finances early this month amid talk of budget shortfalls.

Once the fact-finding mission has made its conclusions, the finance ministers of the eurozone will organize a special meeting in October to assess them.

A positive review is required before the IMF, ECB and European Commission can release the next batch of rescue loans Greece needs to avoid bankruptcy.

A default by Greek or another government would send shock waves through the global economy, particularly in Europe, authorities fear. Banks would suffer such large losses on government bonds they hold that they would cut off credit to the wider economy and cause a recession.

Painpi!! #34 Intrusion Detection hidden business cost ......

What is ?The Pain Pill? ?

Every Tuesday I talk about a security topic in simple terms to reduce our security load, increase our efficiency, and make our security work better. There is a free class on the topic so you can have a deep dive. If you need continuing education credits, this counts. A related reading is posted to expandingsecurity.com

Commercial- We have online classes for CISSP and CEH. Come to one free to see if we have what it takes to make you happy.

This post and the video is located?here.

Intrusion Detection Systems

Intrusion detection systems (IDS) are focused on identifying possible incidents, logging information about them, and reporting intrusion attempts. Before you can make these tools work for your organization, you have homework to do.?You need to define your security policy, detailing what is acceptable and unacceptable behavior. Then you need to tune the technical tool to listen for these unacceptable behaviors.

I ask you; ?Does your security policy ever change?

IDS comes in all forms: user activity monitoring, host activity, and network activity. All those systems get rolled up in a security dashboard.

Let?s focus on what most people think of as IDS. ?IDS conjures up thoughts of a box that listens or sniffs the packets on your network. The problem with the packet tool is this: you get all the preprogrammed definitions or rules of ?BAD / UNACCEPTABLE, but until you compare this with your business activities, you don?t know if it fits your security policy. A classic example is the ?naked lady rules.? (I can?t say the other word or your email monitor will catch it.) We cannot use these rules in crime units that investigate these activities. If you are not in the ?normal? business, you cannot use the ?normal? rules.

False positive cost

What many people do is slap these new definitions in the IDS and BOOM! False positives overwhelm the help-desk, network and security teams. That has a cost to the business. Over time, this wears on everyone involved. People become desensitized. ?Or we get fed up and rely on what are defined as a ?really bad? packet rule and skip all the analyses. ?All the analyses?that could really do our environment some good.

Normal cost and analysis

If you program the IDS correctly, it logs and alerts on?evil traffic. You end up with a list that must be reviewed by a human. Most evil traffic can then be clearly classified as something that you should be blocking with a firewall or another preventive device. Then there is the traffic that requires detective work. This work is not sexy or fun. This work takes a long time to research, track down, and validate. Most of the time other priorities push this to the Friday, Saturday or the Someday list. The best we can hope for is building a definition for that activity, looking for it to happen again in our next log.

More cost?

Another business problem is expectation of response time. In this day of CSI, NCIS, and Leverage type television shows, the expectation is a packet pops up on a screen and the guru knows exactly the attack and pushes the bad guy out of the system with a keystroke. The organization is expecting those 30 minute closures.?Sorry, some events may take weeks or months to trace back to the root cause. ?Typically the job of analysis is only part of someone?s normal duties. That event that was logged at 5 PM on Friday might not get any attention until Monday 8 AM.?More immediate results require more staff, more money. Real-time results cost more than you can afford.

What can we do to make it better for us, for you?

I think you should continually reset expectations and capabilities of your people, processes, and technologies with respect to IDS. With every new upgrade comes a learning curve and a feature set. With every new type of attack your research time is extended.

Policy:

  • Define the frequency of realignment between security policy and the IDS
  • Define monitoring hours and response time expectations

Action items:

  • Track and estimate processing time for alerts ? know how long it takes to do the job over many events.
  • How often do your vendors update the definition files for your IDS?
  • How often do you review the details of the definition files?

Don?t know how to do these activities? Come to our free class! Friday 2011-09-30

Distance Learning- Blessings for All - Reference and Education ...

At present times the distance learning is highly in demand and is avenue for learners who either:

- Do not stay near any good educational institute, or do not have any college that offers the discipline they desire to opt for

-or do not have adequate resources or time to attend any conventional college.

Distance education boon for the aspiring students

Before the emergence of distance education, or distance learning (as popularly known) in the arena of education, an ambitious learner had several limitations on him/her. They are required to be present at their scheduled campus classes at the selected location at the correct time.

Again the students who did not have any good educational institute in their town or neighboring areas have to move to other towns, states or even nations to pursue further studies in order to earn higher degree. This means an absolute uprooting which needed numerous changes in their life. In fact all these required lots of funds as well. The worst thing is that they can earn and pay for their courses as the courses they obtained were full-time programs.

Furthermore, for working individuals who desired to opt for higher education implied sacrifice of their jobs as well as free times that they might have put to other uses. The pursuers of earlier campus based degrees had to maintain a strict timetable to become successful in earning higher degrees. These were not really possible for those persons who had to maintain their employments especially to support their family financially.

But now the entire scenario has changed a lot. Individuals desiring to earn a higher degree can easily fulfill their dreams by obtaining any of the distance learning degrees. They need not sacrifice time, job and move or relocate themselves to another place just to earn the degree.

A brief about distant education

In this distant learning the teachers and the learners may be separated geographically. The regular classes and exams are generally carried out online, sometimes by audio or video chats and through several other kinds of technology.

In simple sense the school and class take place according to the convenience of the pursuers of online courses so that they do not miss out classes.

Moreover, distance education system provides individuals with flexibility which the conventional classrooms cannot offer. Learning may be carried out according to the suitable timetable. Homework and several assignments can be submitted in the due course according to the convenience of the students

.
Distant Management programs

Distance MBA programs are great solutions to enhance your future opportunities. One of the finest traits of such distance MBA study programs is that there prevail no rigid scheduled classes. The pursuers of such management courses are capable to finish their course work at their own time and pace, and may move slower and faster at various points during the year while it suits their timetable. Tests are carried out when they are prepared for it, and if individuals become too much busy and fail to manage their distance MBA course work at definite times they may all the time postpone their tests and give it while the time permits.

3 Great Day Trips in Southern California

Article Directory :: Travel & Leisure Articles

Living in Southern California (SoCal) now, I can honestly say that for those visiting on vacation, there is just way too much to do in a week, let alone just a weekend. Sure, it has a lot to do with the weather because it's rare to be rained out, but there is just a lot to see and do and there's always more being added. So if you are feeling overwhelmed with what to do on your vacation week, have no fear. Most SoCal residents haven't done it all yet. Here are a few things that make great day trips that won't disappoint you whether you are traveling as a couple or as a family.

The Getty Museum - Owned by the Getty Foundation and set up by the late J. Paul Getty, the oil tycoon, the Getty Museum now has two locations. They have the original located off the 405 freeway outside of LA and the other in Malibu. The art collection is pretty spectacular. No matter what your art preferences, you'll find something to suit your fancy. Personally, I was awestruck at the collection including the Van Gogh paintings (my favorite artist along with Raphael). The Getty is also the richest museum in the United States. Tickets are free. You'll just have to pay for parking. And the grounds are the most impressive I have ever seen of any museum in the world. Interested in another museum, the Smithsonian has a Free Museum Day coming up on Sept 25th.

Zuma Beach - Located in Malibu, this part of the California Coastline is the quintessential SoCal beach. It's got great waves and surf, great views of the ocean, dolphin that swim by the shoreline, and million dollar homes behind you overlooking the ocean. It's very family-friendly and very safe. Bring a cooler of food and drink and have a family picnic. Avoid bringing alcohol as the police will be sure to inspect and will most definitely write a ticket. Stop by the local Sunset Restaurant and have a delish fish taco, a California specialty. Zuma Beach is located just about an hour from the Disney Vacation Club in Anaheim for a fun and family-friendly stay.

Vasquez Rocks - Remember the "Flintstones" Movie? Well, that wasn't quite that memorable but it was filmed right here in SoCal at Vasquez Rocks. Vasquez Rocks, named after the famous bank robber's hideout from the law is a wonderful natural rock formation for hiking, picnics, and horseback riding. At peaks you'll have amazing views of the area. And the hikes through the canyon are a lot of fun. Be sure to bring a camera because you'll want to capture these views for the future. As a bonus, get here to watch the sunrise. And on Easter, you can catch a wonderful church service at sunrise. If you're visiting, you'll find great vacation rentals for this area within a couple hours south in San Diego or within an hour on the beach in Ventura or Laguna.

In summary, you'll find southern California to be packed with things to do when visiting on vacation. There weather is always great with sun and clear skies. You can visit the beach, amusement parks, theatres and more. . These three suggestions won't steer you wrong whether you are traveling as a couple or as a family. Be careful, you might have so much fun here in California that you might not leave.

Supporters of Bahrain rulers rebuff vote boycott (AP)

MANAMA, Bahrain ? Rebuffing an election boycott by Shiite protest groups, supporters of the country's Sunni rulers voted in a special parliamentary election that is likely to reinforce divisions after seven months of unrest in the Gulf's main Arab Spring showdown.

Bahrain's confrontation between a reform-seeking Shiite majority and Sunni rulers holding near-total power remains one of the trickiest puzzles for the West as the Middle East's politics are redrawn.

The Shiites' calls for a greater say in national affairs echoes the same notes as in other Arab nations whose uprisings gained clear Western support. But Bahrain's Sunni rulers have strong cards that most others cannot play, including a critical military partnership with Washington as hosts to the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet ? the Pentagon's front-line force against potential threats from Iran.

"This is a fake election. It's useless," said one man among a group of young Shiites gathered in streets littered with trash, rocks and tear gas canisters from clashes the night before.

"We don't have any stake in the political system anymore," said the man, who only gave his first name, Ali, fearing retaliation by the authorities.

The elections were needed to fill 18 seats in the 40-member parliament left vacant by a mass resignation of Shiite lawmakers to protest crackdowns, including deadly clashes, arrest sweeps and workplace purges. The boycott call by the main Shiite blocs effectively turned their backs on Bahrain's political system and staked their hopes in an embarrassingly low turnout at the elections.

But Bahrain's state TV announced the turnout at 51 percent in the districts with open seats ? lower than the 67 percent turnout in last year's full parliamentary election, but an apparent strong reply against the boycott.

Most of the voters who turned out Saturday appeared to be supporters of the government.

Full results are expected by early Sunday. But the most important outcome was already determined by the Shiite boycott: The opposition must now decide whether to escalate public protests as their best remaining option.

"Leaving the political process opens up the obvious question of where to go from here," said Toby Jones, an expert on Bahraini affairs at Rutgers University. "This opens the door for groups calling for more confrontation."

More than 30 people have died in the unrest and hundreds have been arrested, including activists sentenced to life in prison after being convicted of plotting to overthrow the ruling system.

In recent months, Bahrain has faced near daily skirmishes after security forces crushed a wave of large-scale marches and sit-ins inspired by other Arab uprisings. The current clashes are isolated in Shiite neighborhoods and pose no direct danger to the leadership. But they highlight the deep frustrations among many Shiites ? who account for about 70 percent of the population ? and the growing belief in poorer districts that mass protests are the only way to force change.

Hours after the voting ended, clashes raged in some mainly Shiite areas into early Sunday.

Shiites claim they suffer widespread discrimination, including being blocked from top political and government posts. They also bristle at daily evidence of perceived second-class status, such as security forces bringing aboard Sunni Muslims from other Arab nations and south Asia under a government program that grants citizenship in exchange for loyalty.

"Each side sees itself as the legitimate voice of the country and the others as those standing in the way," said Jones. "The election just drives home this message. It's political theater on both sides to make a point."

Security was boosted to high-alert levels for the election. Police set up dozens of checkpoints and patrolled key roadways.

An election coordinator, Brig. Abdullah bin Saif Al Nuaimi, said several arrests were made for trying to disrupt the voting, including throwing stones at cars coming to polling stations.

The voting in predominantly Shiite areas appeared light. At one polling station in the Manama neighborhood of Sanabis, which has been the scene of clashes since Friday, only about 30 ballots were cast in the first four hours of voting.

But at a polling station in Hamad Town, a mixed Sunni-Shiite area, the voting was noticeably stronger with a steady stream of people. Voting was also brisk at special locations, including a mall in the capital, Manama.

Bahrain's parliament has little direct powers, but it carries important symbolism as part of limited political reforms started about a decade ago. It also is one of the few popularly elected bodies permitted by the Arab kings and sheiks who rule the Gulf from Kuwait to Oman.

"It was my duty to vote and show I have solidarity with the leaders of Bahrain," said Samira, a 32-year-old Sunni, who only gave her first name for fear of being harassed after she voted in Sanabis.

Bahrain's prime minister, Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, claimed the voting "asserted that we are on the right path toward a better future." A government-issued guide to the elections carried the heading: "From anarchy to action."

The U.S. has urged all parties in Bahrain to restart reconciliation talks, which were opened by the government in July and produced a set of proposals that included boosting the powers of the parliament. But the U.S. has been careful not to reprimand Bahrain's leaders too harshly in public to avoid jeopardizing strategic bonds in the Gulf.

Bahrain has the backing of powerful neighbors. A Gulf force, led by Saudi Arabia, was dispatched to Bahrain in March to help prop up the 200-year-old Sunni dynasty.

But the protests across the region have stirred some small steps toward more political openness.

The United Arab Emirates also held elections Saturday for seats on a national advisory council, which has no legislative powers but is promoted by Emirati officials as part of a widening "experiment" in allowing a greater public voice in affairs. The UAE's elections will be decided by about 129,000 hand-picked voters.

Next week, Saudi Arabia plans to hold municipal elections after a nearly two-year delay. Women, however, will be still barred from participating or voting.

U.N. will take weeks on Palestinian bid: Abbas (Reuters)

AMMAN (Reuters) ? Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said on Saturday he expected the Security Council to finish debating his nation's application for full United Nations membership within weeks, not months.

Speaking to journalists on his plane back from the General Assembly in New York where he presented the request, Abbas said Security Council members had initially appeared unenthusiastic about the idea of discussing the application.

But he said the mood appeared to change after he delivered a speech to the General Assembly on Friday, during which he pressed the Palestinian case for an independent state alongside Israel.

The United States, Israel's closest ally, has said it will block the move. Both governments say direct peace talks are the correct way for Palestinians to pursue peace. Washington holds veto power in the 15-member Security Council.

"We are talking about weeks not months," Abbas said.

Earlier in Ramallah, a leading official in Abbas's Fatah faction said the Palestinians wanted a decision on the bid within a fortnight.

Lebanon's U.N. ambassador said the Security Council would convene on Monday to discuss the application after Abbas presented it to U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Friday.

Abbas's statehood bid reflects his loss of faith after 20 years of failed peace talks sponsored by the United States, and alarm at Israeli settlement expansion in occupied land that Palestinians want for a state.

Talking about a return to peace talks with Israel, Abbas said: "We will not deal with any initiative which does not contain a halt to settlement or the '67 borders."

But apart from the U.S. veto threat, it was also unclear if the required nine of the body's 15 members would support the bid.

Palestinian Foreign Minister Riad al-Maliki told national radio officials were still hoping to garner the required votes.

"Consultations continue, especially with Gabon, Nigeria and Bosnia-Herzegovina, which have yet to define their position," Maliki was quoted as saying.

Abbas told the reporters accompanying him of a tense atmosphere during the week: "We held dozens of meetings with dozens of delegations which were trying to avert our going to the Security Council," Abbas said.

ALTERNATIVE ROUTE

Alternate to the Security Council, the Palestinians, who currently have observer status at the U.N., could ask for the General Assembly to vote to upgrade them to a non-member state which would afford them membership of various U.N. agencies.

The General Assembly vote requires only a simple majority, seemingly an easy proposition for the Palestinians.

In his speech to the General Assembly on Friday after presenting the request, Abbas said: "I do not believe that anyone with a shred of conscience can reject our application ... and our admission as an independent state."

But Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who spoke shortly after Abbas, said peace could be achieved only through negotiations and dismissed the world body as a "theater of the absurd."

After the two men ended their speeches, the quartet of Middle East peace negotiators -- the United States, Russia, the European Union and the U.N. -- issued a call for a return to direct peace talks which U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said was a "concrete proposal."

"The United States is very pleased that the Quartet was able to issue a statement today with a concrete and detailed proposal to begin a negotiation between the Israelis and the Palestinians without delay or pre-condition," she said.

Abbas accepts negotiations are still necessary, but argues statehood will put Palestinians on a more equal footing. Israel sees the U.N. bid as an attempt to erode its own legitimacy.

Palestinians want to establish a state in the Gaza Strip, a coastal enclave controlled by Islamist Hamas who are opposed to peace talks, and in the West Bank with East Jerusalem as the capital, land Israel captured in the 1967 Middle East War.

The Good Reasons Horse Racing is Such a Fantastic Sport | Athletic ...

The horse has been an integral part of man?s life going back many centuries from the time when they were used to draw carriages, bear soldiers, work the land and more recently being involved in recreation and sport. The human race has been dependent on the horse for both social and economic growth which has come about from man?s ability to harness the horse?s power.

Feudalism, the frowned-upon social system of old, in which the poor trudged through mud, holding the rich aloft, was helped by the horse (though in horses? defense, it wasn?t their fault). Horses gave the nobleman the upper hand in defending property and land, particularly with the introduction of the stirrup the horse became an essential tool on the battlefield. Stirrups meant that armoured knights could be carried on horseback to take part in battle. The simple development of the stirrup took battle to a new level.

]]>

It wasn?t only violent purposes the stirrup served, however. Travellers and merchants were then able to cover much further distances in relative comfort to carry out their business.

Today, stirrups remain mighty essential, allowing for one of our favourite interests: horse racing. Horse racing isn?t just thrilling for the followers and jockeys (and also the racehorses themselves), but it is also big business for the owners. Horse racing can increase the value of a stud incredibly, sometimes making his owner a wealthy man. A racehorse trainer may turn out to be one of the best investments a horse owner ever makes, enabling his animals to reach their maximum potential on the race track, and subsequently in the pasture.

For this reason, racehorse training is a highly sort after service and important to the success of a racehorse.

It is essential that a trainer and an owner have a decent relationship, with lines of communication open, because ultimately it is the owner?s liability to make sure their horses are healthy and happy. The trainer can let an owner to know what measures are to be utilized, but it is up to the owner themselves to take the necessary actions. If a horse is healthy, happy and well-trained, then it will race to the best of its ability, which is all owners can ask for -the ideal return on their investments.

The horse has been and will continue to be crucially in the everyday life of humans. The right trainer can make this experience more profitable and enjoyable for owners, helping to make their investment in horses pay such dividends that they?ll be singing praises to the stirrup.

The Single Stick ? another form of classical fencing

The single stick fencing weapon is unique in the classical period of fencing and fencing in the United Kingdom and the United States. It is also worth noting that single stick in three different forms of the game designed to meet the needs of three very different groups of fencers.

The same single was a long stick from a stick about three feet, mostly ash, about 1 inch in diameter. The player's hand was protected by a security guard greatly, bothlike a woven basket or leather. The weapon is roughly approximated the weight of a sword or a saber and Marine Corps could provide a consistent strike.

The oldest form of gambling Single Stick in 1900 had survived, the English version of the game village, which used a guard hung gamesters made about the length of the blade. Participants wear protective clothing. Depending on the customary practices of the county the non-weapon armmay collected during one to your belt, waistband or passed through both legs to protect a body part. The basic idea was that tactic to beat the opponent torso and arms until the pain and fatigue forced him to lower his guard. Then there was a knock at the front of the scalp can lead to a "broken head," a measure of an inch of blood from a laceration that victory has been defined. In many ways this form of the sword seems very similar to the German university have(Student) Duel in the scale Schlaeger.

A second form of gambling was the single stick of fleets use as a training device for the sword, even as a valid weapon to fend off the attacks later, at the beginning of the Second World War. This can begin as early as 1800, and continued in 1900. This weapon was used in the single stick drills, sharp swords, a safer alternative to use for training. There are plenty of photographic evidence for this use.

A third formdeveloped, has awarded the development of sport as a form of saber fencing, with the whole body as a target and the shot at the shooter, who finished first. The most famous set of rules for this were the Calpe, Military Tournament and the rules of German grammar school. Traditional swordsmanship and footwork blade work was used, with the exception that the pressure point is not permitted for safety. Personal protective equipment is different, but similar, including a fencing maskMask, a sturdy leather jacket, a leather apron, front leg and a security guard at the behest of a cricket pad. Like the sword of the day was inclined to strike with a weapon more powerful light, single stick, it was not for the faint of heart.

Single Stick Sports has made ??only one appearance at the 1904 Olympic Games, and was fenced in the tournament army for a number of years. However, since the sport became the fences as fast as he needed a lighter touch, did not make the single stickTransition, competitive and faded from the scene. Single Stick village can be continued later than the beginning of the Second World War. Even today, some fans with sticks single play, but the potential for accidents and liability concerns ban sticks to an object of study for classical fencing, rather than a competitive sport.

One on One roleplays wanted

Hi! So, I've been doing a lot of original rps lately, group ones mind you, and now I wish to break into the fandom writing again. I don't have set settings, since this is a fandom list, but I do have pairings and groups that I like to play in. Currently, I'm looking for someone to play Blaine Anderson from Glee. Obviously, my icon is Kurt Hummel and that is who I am comfortable playing. What other fandoms do I want to play in? Doctor Who is always agreeable, as is Supernatural, Bones, BBC Robin Hood, BBC Sherlock.

Now, I guess I should say what original things I'm wlling to play. I like any sort of pairing. M/M, M/F...etc. I play both men and women and am a literate-advanced poster. Currently, I am looking to play either my sea-dragon (named Ronan), or an elven-like creature named Scraps. I'd post the character sheets here but that's a lot of reading and I'd rather not overwhelm anyone. I'm also interested in twisting about fairy-tales, working within a rebellion or even a general romance. I have storylines up to my eye-balls, but I like building them with other people, looking to see what character they play so that I can form a plot around that. My posting length is anywhere from 5 paragraphs to 14 paragraphs (1-3 pages) as long as my partner gives me something to work with. I hope to hear for you!

So, in closing:

Am Looking For:

Putin to return as Russia's president (Reuters)

MOSCOW (Reuters) ? Vladimir Putin declared on Saturday he planned to reclaim the Russian presidency at March elections that could open the way for the former KGB spy to rule until 2024.

The announcement, greeted by cheers at a congress of Prime Minister Putin's ruling United Russia party, ended months of speculation over whether he or President Dmitry Medvedev would run. The two have ruled in a power 'tandem' since Putin was forced by the constitution to yield the presidency four years ago after serving a maximum two consecutive terms.

"It is a great honor for me," Putin said to a long standing ovation from thousands of party members in a Moscow sports stadium after Medvedev proposed his mentor return as president. "Thank you, I hope for your support."

Putin, 58, described in leaked U.S. diplomatic cables as the "Alpha dog" in the tandem, then left the stage and embraced Medvedev. He also proposed his younger and more liberal protege replace him as prime minister after the March election to lead a young reformist government.

Over 11 years, Putin has cultivated the image of a vigorous leader, filmed riding bare chested, scuba diving and showing his judo skills. His policies, crushing a Chechen separatist rebellion, taming super-rich businessmen and bringing wayward regions to heel have similarly won him popularity.

But critics say his return to the Kremlin, virtually unopposed, could herald an era of economic and political stagnation in the world's largest country.

MEDVEDEV TO HEAD PARTY LIST

In carefully choreographed scenes, Putin had earlier on Saturday proposed Medvedev, 46, to lead United Russia's list of candidates for a parliamentary election on December 4.

This will prepare Medvedev for a role in government. The move is also intended to help reverse a decline in support for United Russia and boost its hopes of maintaining its two-thirds majority in the State Duma lower house.

"I want to say directly: (Medvedev and I) reached an agreement between ourselves long ago, several years ago already, on what to do in the future, on who should do what," Putin said.

"But both I and Dmitry Anatolyevich Medvedev believe that this is far from the most important thing -- who will do what, who will sit in what place. What is far more important is something else: how we will all work, what results we achieve, and how the citizens of our country will relate to this."

Opinion polls show other potential candidates, such as nationalist Vladimir Zhirinovsky or Communist Gennady Zyuganov, have much less support and Putin will easily be elected.

The main liberal opposition leaders such as former Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov have only limited appeal nationwide and Kasyanov's party has been barred from taking part in the parliamentary election.

The next president will be elected for six years and the constitution still limits the head of state to a maximum of two straight terms -- meaning Putin could be in power for 12 years.

Investors had been urging him to announce his plans because the political uncertainty has deterred many from putting money into the $1.5 trillion economy of the world's largest energy producer.

As president from 2000 to 2008, Putin oversaw an economic boom where household incomes improved on the back of a rise in global oil prices and his tough talking and macho image helped restore Russia's self confidence on the world stage.

But Putin, who was once a KGB officer in East Germany, is widely seen as more conservative than Medvedev and critics accuse him of riding roughshod over human rights and restoring the power of the security forces.

ERA OF STAGNATION?

Some economists say his return to the Kremlin makes it less likely that Russia will carry out much-needed changes such as pension reforms and reducing Russia's dependency on natural resources. Oil and gas revenues make up half the budget.

But Chris Weafer, a strategist at Troika Dialogue investment bank, said the need for change made it impossible for Putin not to carry out reforms.

"There will not be a return to the government style and agenda priorities of the previous Putin administration. That simply is not an option," he said.

Some experts fear a return to the economic stagnation of the 1970s and 1980s under Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev if reforms are not carried out. Critics such as former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev have warned of the risk of unrest.

"For today the country must face a very gloomy outlook -- this is stagnation and decay for another 12 years, this is the Brezhnev era revisited," said Andrei Piontkovsky, a political analyst at the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Russia, a nuclear power and permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, also faces difficulties in ties with the United States, despite calls for a "reset' in relations, and uncertainty following the upheaval in the Arab world.

Putin's return to the presidency puts at risk the good reputation he established among many Russians for restoring a degree of stability after President Boris Yeltsin's chaotic presidency in the 1990s following the Soviet Union's collapse.

But senior political sources had said Putin was worried by a perception that Medvedev did not have enough support among political and business leaders to ensure stability if he tried to push ahead with political reforms as head of state.

Other political sources suggested Putin simply did not trust Medvedev enough to allow him another six years as president -- the term has been extended from four years -- and has been disappointed with his performance.

"I fully agree (with Putin's decision to run). He is a very good and a wise man," said Denis, a Muscovite in his mid-20s.

But some Russians complain there is still a lack of democracy and media freedom in Russia and that they have little say in who runs the country of 142 million people.

"Our opinion does not count, as (the outcome) of both the current and the previous elections was pre-determined," said Anna, a Muscovite in her 20s.

Simpson makes big leap as No. 1 seed at East Lake (AP)

ATLANTA ? Webb Simpson is the No. 1 seed when the Tour Championship gets under way at East Lake, giving him the best shot of the 30-man field to capture the $10 million bonus from the FedEx Cup. It's enough to pinch himself to make sure he's not dreaming.

Only he's already doing that.

Not many had reason to know much about Simpson a year ago. He didn't do anything to distinguish himself in his second year on the PGA Tour. He didn't make it beyond two stages of the FedEx Cup. He wasn't even sure he would keep his card.

"It's just crazy what can happen in a year," he said.

It started with the birth of his first child in February, and the golf has gone from good to great. Simpson picked up his first career win at Greensboro, and then won the Deutsche Bank Championship two weeks later that set him up in the Tour Championship.

His career earnings going into the year were $2.2 million.

A win this week at East Lake, combined with the FedEx Cup bonus, would be worth $11.44 million.

With a reset in the points to give the entire field at the Tour Championship a shot at the biggest payoff in golf, the top five players control their fate. Simpson is followed in the standings by Dustin Johnson, Justin Rose, Luke Donald and Matt Kuchar. If any of them win the Tour Championship, they win the FedEx Cup.

For a 26-year-old like Simpson, in only his third year, it's hard not to keep the eyes on the fairways and greens of East Lake without being tempted to look at the carrot.

"We want to focus that much more on the golf course and the conditions that we're going to face, because we feel like the more we can kind of get lost in the golf course and not think about where we're going to end up in the FedEx Cup, the better we'll play," Simpson said, using the third person to include caddie Paul Tesori.

"It's hard," he said. "It'll be in the back of our minds all week. But I think the better we can try to focus on winning this golf tournament, it'll kind of take care of itself."

It's like that for everyone ? for Simpson at No. 1, all the way to Bo Van Pelt at No. 30.

Geoff Ogilvy is at No. 24, and just happy to be here. He was on the cusp of being eliminated from the playoffs 16 days ago until he made a 20-foot par putt and a 6-foot birdie putt on the last two holes to narrowly advance to the third event, then finished alone in third place at Cog Hill ? a two-way tie for third would not have been enough ? to get to Atlanta.

Yes, he still has a shot at $10 million. But it requires a little math, and Ogilvy didn't have to work his way through the scenarios very long to realize anew that it's a long shot at that.

"Webb Simpson must finish 17th or worse, which is probably not going to happen, you wouldn't think," he said, reading from a chart. "Dustin Johnson has to finish sixth or worse. Justin and Luke have to finish fourth or worse, which isn't going to happen because Luke doesn't finish out of the top three anymore, does he?"

That's when he shifted to a prize that might be just as meaningful.

"I'd love to win this golf tournament," Ogilvy said. "That would be nice because people are forgetting this is one of the tour's special golf tournaments ? The Players Championship, the Tour Championship, the Tournament of Champions. It's still the Tour Championship, and it would be pretty special to have a Tour Championship on your mantle.

"I guess I'll view it like that and try to win," he said. "And if the right things happen, that would be great."

Nick Watney knows the feeling.

A year ago, Watney narrowly got into the Tour Championship at No. 28 and was 12 shots behind going into the weekend. In the final hour, he was one shot off the lead and had a legitimate chance to win the FedEx Cup until a bogey on the 16th hole.

"I was thinking I had no chance," Watney said. "Kuchar was leading the FedEx Cup, and he was playing so consistently. They said I had to win and he had to finish worse than 25th or something. There were so many mathematical scenarios. It was like the BCS."

His message for the guys ranked toward the bottom of the FedEx Cup list was to think about winning ? not the FedEx Cup, but a season-ending tournament that still packs some prestige.

"I think that big crystal with the dude on it is pretty special," Watney said of the Tour Championship trophy. "The FedEx Cup is great, but I mean, there's a lot to be said for that trophy. It gets lost in this sometimes, at least pre-tournament."

And that's from a guy who is No. 7 this year and has a far better chance at $10 million.

Kuchar is the only player who mathematically could capture the FedEx Cup without having won a tournament this year. That nearly happened last year with Paul Casey until he faded over the last few holes.

Adam Scott is No. 19 and thinking about only one trophy ? the crystal one with the dude on it.

"It's just a tournament for me," Scott said when asked about his chances in the FedEx Cup. "If I go home to Australia next week being a winner at a World Golf Championship (Firestone) and the Tour Championship, I'll be pretty proud of my year. I'm so far back, I can't concern myself with money. But I can win the tournament. There's only 30 guys."

That might not be bad advice for the guys who do have better odds in the FedEx Cup.

"If you think about money, then you're not thinking about golf," Scott said.
