A doctor pleaded not guilty Tuesday to killing four people in revenge for his dismissal from a residency program at a Nebraska hospital.

Dr. Anthony Joseph Garcia, 40, is charged with four counts of first-degree murder for the killing of 11-year-old Thomas Hunter and his family?s housekeeper, Shirlee Sherman in March 2008, and the killing of Dr. Roger Brumback and his wife Mary this past May.

In 2001, Dr. Brumback and Thomas?s father, Dr. William Hunter, fired Garcia from his residency at Creighton University for ?unprofessional behavior.?

Garcia attempted to complete his residency in Illinois and Louisiana during the years 2003 to 2008. Two weeks before the first two murders, Garcia?s application for a Louisiana medical license was rejected, in part because he had failed to complete other residency programs, the Chicago Tribune reports.

?Everything is circumstantial,? said Bob Motta, a member of Garcia?s defense team, outside the courthouse Tuesday. ?There?s evidence of him in Nebraska, but no evidence of him in any house.?

Garcia was arrested last week in southern Illinois for a DUI and gun charges. He was extradited to Omaha last week to face the murder counts. Garcia was denied bail.

Alison Motta, another member of the defense team, said that the hearing was ?a reflection of the community?s fear of [Garcia] and want for punishment.?
