Why Didn't Liz Cheney Run for the Senate in Virginia?

Republican officials are grumbling that Liz Cheney passed up an opportunity to run in her adopted state of Virginia, leaving the party empty-handed as it searches for a challenger against Sen. Mark Warner. Instead of taking one for the Republican team, she's sparked an intra-party war in Wyoming. And, some strategists say, her prospects would be slightly better running in a battleground state than waging a long-shot primary battle against a popular sitting senator.

The daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney grew up in Northern Virginia and lived there until last year. Her reputation as a hawk and stalwart supporter of the military would appeal to the state's significant population of veterans and its large defense industry, and her more-moderate positioning on divisive cultural topics such as gay marriage is tailor-made for swing voters in the Washington suburbs. Most Wyoming residents, according to one automated poll, think she'd be better off running in Virginia.

Instead of trying to translate her anti-Obama message against a Republican, the message would make more sense against Warner, who has been a reliable ally of the Obama administration. Even if Warner looks unbeatable, Republicans could use a qualified candidate in Virginia. Few Republicans expect the party will recruit anyone stronger than a low-profile state legislator. Cheney, at the least, would have given the party a challenger who could have raised millions to make Warner work for a second term. ?

But Cheney never seriously considered running in Virginia. Past and current officials at the National Republican Senatorial Committee say they never spoke with her about a campaign there (or anywhere else)?a sign they are fully aware of the baggage her last name carries throughout much of the country.

Still, a party that insists it plans to take the fight to Democratic senators in swing states such as Virginia is left wondering if it can find a credible candidate to carry its banner next year. ?

"I think it's unfortunate that millions of dollars in Republican donor money are going to be spent in a divisive Republican primary in a Republican state," said Brian Walsh, a GOP strategist and former communications director at the National Republican Senatorial Committee. "It certainly would be far more beneficial to have that money be used against holding Mark Warner accountable.?

To be sure, Cheney would begin her hypothetical matchup with the state?s former governor as the race?s heavy underdog. A robust 61 percent of voters approve of the incumbent?s job performance, according to a mid-July poll from Quinnipiac University. Warner's unique popularity and the state?s rapidly changing demographics make the race an uphill climb for any Republican.

That she's choosing to wage an intra-party battle against Enzi instead is a telling indication of how Republicans feel about defeating Warner. Of the many battleground states featuring Senate elections next year?Colorado, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, and New Hampshire among them?Virginia is seen as the least likely to fall into GOP hands.

But it's not as if her odds are much better against a popular Republican senator in Wyoming, either. Early polling of her looming battle with Enzi gives a pessimistic outlook for her chances. The Republican automated polling firm Harper Polling found the incumbent leading Cheney 55 percent to 21 percent. There's no ideological divide for Cheney to exploit, as successful conservative challengers have used against former Indiana Sen. Richard Lugar and Utah Sen. Robert Bennett. Enzi holds one of the most conservative voting records, according to National Journal's most recent vote ratings. And Cheney hasn't yet received the support from outside conservative groups that often comes with insurgent primary campaigns.

"It's difficult to see her make the case to Republican primary voters that he should be replaced," Walsh said.

Cheney's decision to run in Wyoming has been met with equal parts scorn and bewilderment?from her own party. The NRSC reiterated it was endorsing Enzi. Alan Simpson, a former senator from Wyoming, has said it will start a war within the party. Local editorial boards have mocked her campaign and suggested she run elsewhere. The Democratic automated polling firm Public Policy Polling found only one-third of Wyoming residents believe she is a true native of the state. ?

Of course, Cheney had long focused on running for office in Wyoming, moving into the state last year. At the time, rumors were swirling that Enzi was poised to retire, which could explain why Cheney had called the senator a "friend" only months earlier. Her father, the former vice president, is still popular in Wyoming, having represented the state in Congress for a decade in the 1980s.

That's not the case in battleground Virginia, where Liz Cheney's promised confrontational tone could backfire. Cheney has pinned her campaign's rationale on offering more vigorous opposition to Obama's agenda than Enzi.

"I think it speaks volumes that she thinks a popular Republican incumbent in a red state is more beatable than a Democratic incumbent in a swing state," said Mo Elleithee, a Virginia-based Democratic strategist.

(AP) ? The front landing gear of a flight arriving at New York's LaGuardia Airport collapsed Monday right after the plane touched down on the runway, officials said, sending the aircraft skidding before it came to a halt.

Ten passengers were treated at the scene, with six being taken to a hospital with minor injuries, said Thomas Bosco, Acting Director of Aviation for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which oversees the area airports. The six crew members were taken to another hospital for observation.

Dallas-based Southwest said there were 150 people on Flight 345 coming from Nashville, Tenn., while the Port Authority said the total was 149.

Bosco said the nose gear of the plane collapsed when it landed at 5:40 p.m., and "the aircraft skidded down the runway on its nose and then veered off and came to rest in the grass area."

Bosco said there was no advance warning of any possible problem before the landing.

A passenger, South Carolina National Guard Sgt. 1st Class Anniebell Hanna, 43, said the flight had been delayed leaving Nashville. Passengers had heard an announcement saying "something was wrong with a tire," she said, waiting in a room at LaGuardia several hours after the incident.

At LaGuardia, "when we got ready to land, we nosedived," said Hanna. She and some family members were coming to New York for a visit.

"I hit my head against the seat in front of me," she said. "I hit hard."

Emergency crews were seen spraying foam toward the front end of the plane on the tarmac. The Port Authority said the passengers exited the plane by using chutes.

Hanna said she was among the first to get off the plane, and could smell something burning when she got down to the tarmac. The passengers were put on a bus and taken to the terminal, where they were told to make lists of their possessions on the plane in order to get them back.

The airport was temporarily closed, but one of two runways was operating shortly after 7 p.m., and Bosco said the Port Authority was hoping to have the airport fully open by Tuesday morning.

The FAA is investigating, as is the National Transportation Safety Board.

Richard Strauss, who was on a nearby plane waiting to take off for Washington, said the nose of the plane was "completely down on the ground. It's something that I've never seen before. It's bizarre."

A rear stairwell or slide could be seen extending from the Southwest flight, said Strauss, who owns a Washington public relations firm. His plane, which was about 100 yards from the Southwest flight, wasn't allowed to taxi back to the gate, he said.

Bobby Abtahi, an attorney trying to catch a flight to Dallas, was watching from the terminal and heard a crowd reacting to the accident.

"I heard some people gasp and scream. I looked over and saw sparks flying at the front of the plane," he said.

The incident came 16 days after Asiana Flight 214 crash-landed at San Francisco's international airport on July 6, killing two Chinese teenagers; a third was killed when a fire truck ran over her while responding to the crash, authorities said. Dozens of people were injured in that landing, which involved a Boeing 777 flying from South Korea.

Longtime pilot Patrick Smith, author of "Cockpit Confidential: Everything You Need to Know About Air Travel. Questions, Answers, and Reflections" and AskthePilot.com, said landing gear incidents are not high on the list of worries for pilots.

"It doesn't happen very often but I need to emphasize just how comparatively minor this is and how far, far down the hierarchy it is," he said. From a pilot's perspective, this is nearly a non-issue. They make for good television, but this is far down the list of nightmares for pilots."

With problems fixed, Nvidia plans July 31st launch of its Android ...

After an initial delay, gamers don?t have to wait much longer for Nvidia Shield. The handheld gaming device starts shipping to customers on July 31 according to an Nvidia blog post on Sunday. Originally, Shield was set for a June delivery date but a last-minute mechanical problem was found in the device and the company decided to address it before any units shipped

Last month, we made the difficult decision to delay the launch of SHIELD due to a mechanical issue we found in our rigorous testing process. Since then we have been working non-stop to put SHIELD through its paces and ensure it meets the highest quality control standards in the industry.

This marks the second change to Nvidia?s Shield, which was introduced at January?s Consumer Electronics Show. The game controller with integrated 5-inch touch display and Tegra 3 processor debuted with a $349 price tag but Nvidia later announced a $50 price cut; even for those who already pre-ordered.

nvidia-shieldConsumers will be able to see and try Shield, which runs Google Android, at?select GameStop, Microcenter and Canada Computers locations in the U.S. and Canada.

That in-store experience may help because, on paper, a $299 price tag for a dedicated Android gaming device could be a tough sell.?Shield can also be used to stream and play PC games via the Steam gaming platform, but essentially the standalone device is mainly meant to provide hardware controls and better sound quality to Android games.

Even though some game titles are optimized for Nvidia?s Tegra 4 chip, I suspect Android gamers will opt for a lower-cost option, such as the $49 Moga Pro Controller, which adds hardware controls to an existing Android handset.

Doctor charged with four revenge killings in Omaha

Omaha Police via Reuters

Anthony Joseph Garcia was charged Tuesday with four murders in Omaha, including those of a pathology professor and his wife in May.

By Gillian Spear, NBC News

A doctor pleaded not guilty Tuesday to killing four people in revenge for his dismissal from a residency program at a Nebraska hospital.

Dr. Anthony Joseph Garcia, 40, is charged with four counts of first-degree murder for the killing of 11-year-old Thomas Hunter and his family?s housekeeper, Shirlee Sherman in March 2008, and the killing of Dr. Roger Brumback and his wife Mary this past May.

In 2001, Dr. Brumback and Thomas?s father, Dr. William Hunter, fired Garcia from his residency at Creighton University for ?unprofessional behavior.?

Garcia attempted to complete his residency in Illinois and Louisiana during the years 2003 to 2008. Two weeks before the first two murders, Garcia?s application for a Louisiana medical license was rejected, in part because he had failed to complete other residency programs, the Chicago Tribune reports.

?Everything is circumstantial,? said Bob Motta, a member of Garcia?s defense team, outside the courthouse Tuesday. ?There?s evidence of him in Nebraska, but no evidence of him in any house.?

Garcia was arrested last week in southern Illinois for a DUI and gun charges. He was extradited to Omaha last week to face the murder counts. Garcia was denied bail.

Alison Motta, another member of the defense team, said that the hearing was ?a reflection of the community?s fear of [Garcia] and want for punishment.?

Gourmet Coffee Suppliers, J. Martinez, Analyze Coffee Vs. Energy Drinks

NORCROSS, GA, July 22, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The Kona coffee dealers, J. Martinez, would like to take a moment to talk about the differences between coffee and energy drinks. The latter have become very popular in recent years. Products like Amp, Monster, Red Bull and 5 Hour Energy are all marketed with the message that the boost users get is more effective than coffee. They also emphasize the "no crash later" phrase, as this is why many people are hesitant to drink these products in the first place.

The coffee espresso experts note that a good old cup of Joe is much healthier than many energy drinks. Although it typically contains more caffeine, it lacks the excess amount of sugar that manufacturers often put in their products. There has been a lot of debate about the health effects of coffee, but the gourmet coffee specialists remind consumers that moderation is the key.

According to John Martinez, Owner of J. Martinez & Company, "Too much of anything is bad, but drinking one or two cups of gourmet coffee is much safer than consuming an energy drink, not to mention coffee tastes better and is more relaxing. Coffee tends to affect people more quickly due to the higher concentration of caffeine, but it also doesn't have 1,000 percent of vitamin B12 like some energy drinks do. This is why people often experience the jitters instead of simply being more alert when they consume these products."

The Jamaica coffee suppliers want to remind readers that some energy drinks contain upwards of 500 mg of caffeine, which is roughly 15 times that of a cup of coffee.

J. Martinez is a leading supplier of brands like Hawaii Kona coffee. To learn more about their products and services, please visit http://www.martinezfinecoffees.com.

About J. Martinez & Company:
Established in 1988, J. Martinez & Company is an Atlanta-based purveyor of fine coffees and other gourmet items. J. 95% Stories We Tell

All Critics (96) | Top Critics (35) | Fresh (91) | Rotten (5)

Everyone has a different story. I found myself holding my breath listening to them talk. The story twists like a thriller.

Stories We Tell is not just very moving; it is an exploration of truth and fiction that will stay with you long after repeated viewings.

Part of the movie's pleasure is how comfortable the "storytellers" are with their director; you get a sense of a complicated but tight-knit family, going along with Sarah's project because they love her.

Never sentimental, never cold and never completely sure of anything, Polley comes across as a woman caught in wonder.

After you see it, you'll be practically exploding with questions - and with awe.

An unconventional but wonderfully assembled exploration of how -- and why -- we tell stories, all wrapped in a closely guarded family secret.

Polley is savvy, using her talent as a director -- as a storyteller -- to give it universal appeal even though it's a very specific account.

Perhaps the most organic, transformative meeting of form and function I've seen this year.

Stories We Tell is cinema cutting to the profound truth of why we use narrative to make sense of the world.

For the most part, Polley's thoughts and feelings are pretty much absent, but the film makes some nice observations about memory and how it affects - yup - the stories we tell.

The movie isn't really about the Polley family: It's about memory, and loss, and forgiveness, and, through it all, hope. It'll knock you over.

What emerges is a fascinating and illuminating story, one that runs the gamut from intense joy to deep sadness and features a couple of surprising twists that take proceedings off in strange and unusual directions.

An honest and authentic documentary that powerfully explores the filmmaker's own family.

Polley's portrait of modern family life is a playfully profound discussion of narrative forms - the way in which we each construct our own reality through stories, part truth, part invention.

A decent piece of work, but too fussy for its own good.

Polley approaches every character with compassion, intent upon blessing them, and serving the audience with useful questions about how we seek the truth.

Polley is working in the tradition of Orson Welles, but her trickery can be exasperating; it also neutralises many of the emotional revelations.

With Away From Her and Take This Waltz, actress-turned-filmmaker Polley has proved herself as an unusually gifted director, but this inventive, moving documentary reveals even more artistic ambition.

What saves it is our realisation that it isn't just a documentary.

A bittersweet and compelling autobiographical family portrait.

Kane-like in its mirrored complexity, flashing in its mischievous irony, the story is a shiny maze which Polley enters knowing exactly where and what her Minotaur is - the secret of her paternal parentage - while spinning for us a thread to follow.

Polley ... smilingly tells us that a story like hers can never truly be tied down, even as she screws every last piece into place.

Polley's cine-tribute is a gripping and absorbing meditation on the unknowability of other lives.

The films greatest achievement is in how deeply mesmerising one woman's story can be, regardless of whether she's famous or not.
