The family of U.S. Army Master Sgt. Clifford Ryan watched the arrival early Thursday at Los Angeles International Airport.
Ryan was killed in November 1950 while serving in a tank division near Unsan, North Korea. His remains were found in 2000 by workers mining for gold.
The 27-year-old from Muscatine, Iowa, was listed as missing in action until last year when his remains were identified through DNA testing at a lab in Hawaii.
Ryan served in the Army for 12 years and also saw battle in World War II. He received the Silver Star and the Purple Heart.
He will be buried Saturday at Riverside National Cemetery.
