Sony group closes on $2.2B EMI publishing purchase

(AP) ? A group led by Sony has closed on a $2.2 billion acquisition of British music company EMI Music Publishing from Citigroup.

The closing comes after the U.S. Federal Trade Commission cleared the deal on Friday morning. The deal was cleared by EU regulators in April, with some conditions.

Besides Sony, the buyers include the Michael Jackson estate and several investment funds including United Arab Emirates government-backed fund Mubadala Development Co.

EMI's publishing arm manages the rights to songs of popular artists such as Amy Winehouse, Regina Spektor and Rihanna.

Universal Music Group has a pending deal to buy the rest of EMI.

Citigroup had foreclosed on private-equity firm Terra Firma, which bought the music company in 2007.

Automotive Market Report: Automotive Coating Market

In 2011, the global automotive coating market size surged by 10.2% to USD14.881 billion from USD13.501 billion in 2010; the OEM automotive coating market size increased by 10.5% to USD7.989 billion from USD7.231 billion; the automotive refinishing coating market size climbed by 13.5% to USD6.892 billion from USD6.070 billion in 2010. The market of automotive refinishing coating was driven by the increase in car ownership. ?

???? ?
Automotive coating mainly refers to cationic electrocoat and primer surface, both of which are included in the OEM automotive coating, while automotive refinishing coating only refers to primer surface. As cationic electrocoat requires high technological threshold, less than 10 manufacturers worldwide are capable of the manufacture, let alone mass-production. The major players cover BASF, Dupont, PPG, Kansai Paints, Nippon Paints and KCC.
? ? ? ? ? ??Global and China Automotive Coating Industry Report, 2011-2012
BASF is a Germany-based enterprise. Although DuPont is an American business, the automotive coating business of DuPont was sourced from Germany-based Herberts Group. PPG is the largest coating corporation in the United States. Both Kansai Paints and Nippon Paints are Japan-based companies, while KCC is from South Korea.

As there is a quite low threshold for access into the automotive refinish coating industry, a host of manufacturers tap into the business which features a very high degree of market concentration. And the combined market occupancy of the top 5 industrial players, including BASF, Dupont, PPG, Kansai Paints and Akzo-Nobel, hit 90%. Although the shipment of these manufacturers is not fairly huge, but the unite price is rather high. Akzo-Nobel boasts the world?s largest coating corporation, but it is not so powerful in automotive coating sector. PPG is the world?s largest manufacturer of both automotive refinish coating and automotive coating. But for KCC and Nippon Paints, both are only engaged in producing OEM automotive coating which is also the hit product of BASF.????? ?

The automotive market of China has seen revival in recent months, with the vehicle sales volume during Jan.-May up by 1.7% year-on-year to 8.0235 million units, reversing the year-on-year downward trend during the past four months. With the launch of economic stimulus policies by Chinese government, the automobile industry of China is expected to turn better in the second half of the year.??? ?

China?s OEM automotive coating market, especially the sedan market, is dominated by foreign companies by and large. In terms of the primer surface for commercial vehicle, domestic manufacturers hold a certain market share, with the representatives including Shanghai Kinlita Chemical, Zhongshan Bridge Chemical, Zhongshan Bridge Chemical, WuHan Twin Tigers Coatings, Hubei Tiane Coating, V.ABC Paints Manufacturing (Shenzhen), Tianjin Colouroad Coatings & Chemicals and Fujian Xinzhanwang Chemical Industry. In particular, Shanghai Kinlita Chemical is one among a few in the world that masters the cationic eletrocoat technology.

(AP) ? Google will sell a small tablet computer bearing its brand in a challenge to Amazon's Kindle Fire.

The Nexus 7 is designed specifically for Google Play, the online store that sells movies, music, books, apps and other content ? the things Amazon.com Inc. also sells for its tablet computer.

Google's announcement that it's putting its brand on a tablet comes a week after Microsoft Corp. said the same thing. Both moves risk alienating Google's and Microsoft's hardware partners. Those companies, in turn, could be less inclined to work closely with Google and Microsoft.

The Nexus 7 and the Kindle Fire have screens that measure 7 inches diagonally, smaller than the nearly 10 inches on Apple Inc.'s popular iPad. The Nexus 7 will also be light ? at about 0.75 pound, compared with the Kindle Fire's 0.9 pound. The iPad weighs 1.44 pounds.

The Nexus 7 will ship in mid-July starting at $199 ? the same price as the Kindle Fire. By contrast, iPads start at $499. Customers can start ordering it through Google on Wednesday, initially in the U.S., Canada and Australia.

Google's price is aggressively low, considering that the Nexus 7 has more features than the Kindle, including a front-facing camera. The Kindle is believed to be roughly break even at $199. Samsung Electronics Co. sells a tablet similar to Google's for $250.

Andrew Rassweiler, an analyst with IHS iSuppli, said he suspects Google will be subsidizing the tablet to sell it starting at $199.

Google has previously put its own brand on a flagship line of "Nexus" smartphones. But that market is more mature than the tablet market, and there was less risk of Google alienating partners, particularly since it didn't price the phones lower than the norm.

Much like the Nexus phones, the Nexus 7 tablet will be a showcase for a new version of Google Inc.'s Android operating system, in this case one called "Jelly Bean."

Although the tablet carries the Google brand, the machine will be made by AsusTek Computer Inc. Google recently expanded into the device-making business with its $12.5 billion purchase of Motorola Mobility, but the company has stressed that it intends to continue to rely on Asus and other manufacturers that have embraced Android.

Microsoft's announcement of its Surface tablet last week and Google's Nexus 7 add up to a "troubling" situation for tablet makers such as Samsung Electronics Co., said Jeff Orr, an analyst with ABI Research.

When a software-supplying partner turns around and puts out its own hardware product, "is that a partner or an enemy?" Orr asked.

Orr also questioned whether Google's strategy of pricing the tablet low is really going to win it any fans in the long term. Apple, he noted, dominates the tablet market with a product that's expensive but works well.

There are already other Android-powered tablets on the market, but none have proven nearly as popular as the iPad or Kindle Fire. That has raised worries at Google as more people rely on tablets to surf the Internet.

For Google, advertising dollars are at stake. If Apple retains its dominance and other players such as Amazon and Microsoft gobble up the rest of the sales, they could set up their operating systems in ways that de-emphasize Google's Internet search engine and other services. Apple develops its own system, while Amazon modifies Android for use in Kindles. Microsoft's will run on a new version of Windows.

Apple already has announced that the next version of the iPad operating system will abandon Google's digital maps as the built-in navigation system. That shift could cause neighborhood merchants to spend less money advertising on Google.

Google also announced a home entertainment device called Nexus Q. It sends content from your personal collection or YouTube to your existing TV and speaker systems. You control it through a separate Android phone or tablet.

The Nexus Q, which Google is calling the world's first "social streaming device," will available in July in the U.S. initially and sell for $299.

Google made the announcements during a keynote to open its annual conference in San Francisco for computer programmers.

Google also demonstrated its futuristic, Internet-connected glasses by having parachutists jump out of a blimp hovering about 7,000 feet above San Francisco. The audience got live video feeds from their glasses as they descended to land on the roof of the Moscone Center, the location of the conference.

Google is making prototypes of the device, known as Project Glass, available to test. They can only be purchased ? for $1,500 ? at the conference this week, for delivery early next year. Google is also giving all 6,000 attendees a Nexus 7, Nexus Q and a Nexus phone for free.

Also on Wednesday, Google unveiled a new search tool to help you get the right information at the right time on your mobile device. Called Google Now, the tool will be part of Jelly Bean, which will be available in mid-July. Some devices, including the Galaxy Nexus, will get the upgrade automatically over the air.

With Google Now, if you say "traffic," for example, it will look at your usual commute to work and show you alternative routes if there's a lot of traffic. It will tell you the scores of your favorite sports teams automatically, and it will keep you up to date on flight statuses if you are flying somewhere.

The feature bears resemblance to the Siri virtual assistant on Apple's iPhone.

Jelly Bean will also come with the ability to share photos by tapping two phones together.

After a bit of digging, we were able to hunt down some images of the rumored Nexus Q, and it now seems inevitable that we'll be getting some up close and personal time with this particular device after today's keynote session. According to some documents found by Droid-Life, the Nexus Q will have some interaction with YouTube, Google Play Movies, Play Music and TV, and will require the use of a phone or tablet running Gingerbread or higher.

Update: it looks like the official product page on the Google Play Store has been updated. So here's the details: the Nexus Q lets you stream music and movies from Google Play and YouTube to your home entertainment system. It offers a 25W amp, enabling you to power it to a set of speakers, or you can hook it up to an AV receiver or HDTV. According to the product page, the Nexus Q will be available for $300. So far it appears to be a US-only product, so we'll have to wait and see if more is revealed at the I/O keynote session. Check out the video after the break!

Screenwriter Nora Ephron Dead At 71

Oscar-nominated writer of 'Sleepless in Seattle' and 'When Harry Met Sally ... ' died of pneumonia.

Academy Award-nominated screenwriter and director Nora Ephron died Tuesday (June 26) from pneumonia. She was 71. News of Ephron's passing first hit the Internet late Tuesday when journalist Liz Smith, a friend of Ephron's, published a column remembering the late director.

"She never gave the answer I expected to anything. She was grave in her humor, which made it deadly, unexpected, truly funny and dauntingly intelligent," wrote Smith. "She seemed never to want or expect anything, while always demanding the best from the rest of us. She was — always — right and somehow left the smartest, most ambitious and silliest of us in the dust at her feet."

Ephron lived a storied life both on set and behind the scenes. Born in New York City in 1941 and raised in Beverly Hills, California, Ephron worked as a journalist for numerous years before trying her hand writing and directing for film. Her writing appeared in such outlets as Esquire and New York, and she was even married to Carl Bernstein of Watergate fame from 1976 until 1980. She later wed screenwriter Nicholas Pileggi in 1987; they remained married until the time of her death.

In 1983, Ephron's first major Hollywood movie, "Silkwood," arrived in theaters. Starring marquee names including Meryl Streep, Kurt Russell and Cher, Ephron's "Silkwood" was based on the true story of Karen Silkwood, who was killed in a suspicious accident during her investigation into the unethical practices of the nuclear power plant that employed her. The film was nominated for five Oscars, including one for Ephron's screenplay.

Over the course of her career, Ephron cemented her place in Hollywood as one of the industry's finest romantic comedy writers. She wrote the iconic "When Harry Met Sally ... " and directed numerous films, including the Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan-starring "Sleepless in Seattle" and "You've Got Mail." Her final film as writer and director was "Julie & Julia."

"I won't say, 'Rest in peace, Nora,' " Smith wrote in her eulogy of Ephron. "I will just ask, 'What the hell will we do without you?' "

Share your condolences for Ephron's family and friends in the comments.

HP LaserJet Enterprise 600 Printer M603N

At 62 pages per minute, the HP LaserJet Enterprise 600 Printer M603N ($1,499 direct) has the fastest rated speed of any printer we?ve reviewed. And its 275,000-page maximum monthly duty cycle, as well as substantial standard and optional paper capacity, pegs it for workgroups that print massive amounts of material. In our testing, it proved its mettle, printing out our test suite in a near-record pace.

The M603N is very similar to the Editors? Choice HP LaserJet Enterprise 600 Printer M601DN ($899 direct, 4 stars)?a little faster, with a slightly higher duty cycle, and password-protected printing, but lacking an automatic duplexer and selling at a higher price.

The M603N measures 15.7 by 16.3 by 20 inches (HWD) and weighs 58 pounds. The front panel has a 4-line monochrome LCD and some basic control buttons: Home, Help, Stop, and Back, plus a 2-way rocker control with center button. To the right is a numeric keypad for entering PIN numbers for password-protected printing; below the panel is a port for a USB thumb drive.

The M603N has a standard 600-sheet paper capacity, between a 500-sheet main tray and a 100-sheet multipurpose feeder. Additional paper-handling options are available to bring the paper capacity to a maximum of 3,600 sheets. Options include a 1,500-sheet input tray ($499 direct), a 500-sheet input tray ($299), a 400-sheet custom media cassette ($229 direct), a 75-sheet envelope feeder ($249), a 500-sheet stacker ($149), a 500-sheet stapler/stacker ($249), and a 500-sheet mailbox ($399).

As the base model of HP?s M603 printers, the M603N lacks an automatic duplexer for printing on both sides of a sheet of paper. A duplexer is added with the M603DN ($1,749 direct), while the M603xh ($2,399 direct) adds an additional 500-sheet paper tray plus an encrypted hard drive along with the auto-duplexer.

The M603N provides USB and Ethernet (including Gigabit), with optional WiFi. I tested it over an Ethernet connection with its driver installed on a PC running Windows Vista.

HP LaserJet Enterprise 600 Printer M603N

Printing Speed

I timed the M603N on our business applications suite (using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing), at an effective 14.3 pages per minute (ppm), about what we?d expect from its 62-page per minute rated speed that?s based on printing text documents without graphics or photos?our test suite includes text pages, graphics pages, and pages with mixed content. That?s just short of the fastest speed for a printer we?ve tested, and a tad faster than the LaserJet M601DN?s tested speed (13.4 ppm). The OKI B730DN ($1,299 direct, 4 stars) tested at 12 ppm, while the Editors? Choice Lexmark T650N ($700 street, 4 stars) lagged them at 10 ppm.?

Output Quality

The M603DN?s output quality is fine for typical business needs. Its text was slightly below par for a laser, but still good enough for anything short of demanding desktop publishing applications that require very small fonts. Graphics were of average quality, good enough for internal business use. Its inability to differentiate between some similar shades of gray would make me hesitate to hand them to important clients, however. Photo quality was also average, good enough to print out recognizable images from files or Web pages, which is about all you can expect from a mono laser.?

The M603N has a low cost per page, at 1.2 cents. That?s a half cent less per page than the M601DN and the Lexmark T650N.

The HP LaserJet Enterprise 600 Printer M603N lives up to its promise as a fast monochrome laser for workgroups with prodigious printing needs. It has sizzling speed, good standard and optional paper capacity, and output quality suitable for standard business needs. It?s substantially faster than the OKI B730DN and the Editors? Choice Lexmark T650N, and it edges the LaserJet M601DN in speed. It also has a higher monthly duty cycle than the T650N and M601DN, making it suitable for businesses with even higher-volume printing.

Although it has slightly lower running costs than both the M601DN and T650N, the M603N has a substantially higher sticker price, $600 higher than the M603N and $800 higher than the T650N. Businesses with truly massive printing volume and the need for speed may want to spring for the M603N.

Paleo Diet - Key To Susan's Journey To Health

Written by Susan Thomas:

?

Dear Robb:

I wrote my first draft the old-fashioned way with pen and paper.? Not just any paper, mind you.? I wrote in my trusty journal where I track everything from my WOD?s, to the food I eat, and many, many thoughts, feelings, and desires in between.

I was honored when you asked for my story.? Yours resonated with me immediately; especially upon hearing your mother also has SLE.? We have actually spoken (or skyped, as it were) about two years ago in a nutritional seminar where you suggested I increase my fat intake in the morning.? I was counting salmon pills as a fat.? You correctly pointed out that it was a supplement.? I digress.

My story started long ago, when I was about 11 years old.? I started to loose weight and generally felt awful.? When the doctors ordered blood tests, it was discovered that my blood count was abnormal.? In fact, it was so low that I was hospitalized almost immediately.? For the following year, I was in and out of the hospital.? No treatments seemed to help the ?blood disorder?.? The doctors ordered a bone marrow test because they were convinced it was leukemia.? Just before I had the test, I had a normal blood test.? I don?t remember much from that time.? My roommate died in the bed beside me, which stays vivid to this day.? The only other memory was the pain.? Even the gentlest touch hurt.

Fast forward about six years.? The sick 11 year old has grown into an active healthy teenager.? Then I started to get these awful, painful, swollen red lumps on my claves about the size of golf balls.? They would come and go, but my doctor could not seem to pin down a cause.

Over the next decade, the lumps would continue to come and go.? It is called Erythema Nodosum and is relatively harmless.? I had one biopsied.? The only comment the doctor made was that I had a positive ANA test at the time.? It meant nothing really, according to the doctor.? False positives happen all the time.

A few years later, I contracted a viral infection.? The worst side effect was loosing my voice for a week.? My husband thought this was wonderful.

It was strange though, because I didn?t bounce back.? I was always fatigued, loosing weight and it literally hurt to touch me.? It reminded me so much of how I felt as a child with that ?blood disorder?.? I also had a severe pain in my lower back.?? I saw my family doctor who diagnosed depression.? I left his office with a prescription for anti-depressants.

The symptoms did not improve with the medication.? In fact, they got worse.? I was always feverish and the pain in my lower back was excruciating.? I finally went to the emergency room.? They put me in a room and started me on intravenous morphine.? The pain dulled slightly.? After a battery of tests determined there was fluid near my kidneys, they called in the OBGYN.

As you mention in your book, autoimmune disease is often interconnected.? I had endometriosis pretty much since initial menstruation.? I had already had two laparoscopic surgeries by this point so the logical thing to do was call in the gyno.? He couldn?t tell what was causing the fluid, so he booked an OR for the following morning.

I woke up from the surgery to find the pain in my back had subsided.? The doctor had removed more endometriosis and drained the fluid.? ?Idiopathic? was the term he used for the fluid.? Translation: ?I have no idea what caused it.?

After another few days in the hospital, I was anxious to get out.? I had started a new position within the bank as an investment specialist and was missing some very valuable training on trusts and estates.? My husband took me from the hospital and drove me to the training centre.? I finished the course in a wheelchair.

I came home 5 days later to have my symptoms return, only worse.? The pain was unbearable.? We returned to the hospital and discovered the idiopathic fluid was again, floating around my kidneys.? The IV was inserted and the morphine pumped into my veins, but nothing seemed to help.? Once again, the doctor performed a laparoscopy to remove the free floating fluid.? I was in the hospital over two weeks before they sent me home.

I wasn?t home a week when my fever spiked, the pain worsened and we were once again, off to the hospital.? By now, my blood cell count was abnormal.? The doctors were checking for lymphoma.? All I wanted to do was simply die to escape the pain.? Of course, the fluid was back.? The final surgery was assisted by an urologist.? It wasn?t by laparoscope either.?? They cut me open, removed my left ovary, fallopian tube and part of my peritoneum.

All told, I had 6 admissions and spent over 6 months in the hospital.? I couldn?t do my new job and subsequently lost it.? I didn?t care though.? I was convinced I was going to die.

I was taking long term morphine, statex (short term) morphine, and duragesic patches but nothing worked on the pain in my back.? As one doctor remarked, ?You take enough painkillers to tranquilize a horse.? How on earth are you able to carry on a conversation??

I was bed ridden another year.? I couldn?t even go to the washroom unassisted.? We?d seen every specialist it seemed, but no one could find out what was wrong.? My family doctor finally referred me to my rheumatologist.? He took the massive file I brought and set it aside.? ?I?d like to examine you first.?? He said.? ?So the other doctor?s opinions do not cloud my judgement.?

That appointment changed my life.? He said, ?I think you have lupus? and injected me with Depo-medrol to get the immediate symptoms under control.? I also started several medications including Plaquenil, an anti-malarial, NSAIDS and immune suppressants.

6 months later, I could get out of bed.? I started to take my ?trusty sidekick?, (as I like to call him) our big loveable mutt, who never left my side out for walks.? He was patient.? I counted my progress by streetlights.? I walked to the first one and back.? Over the next month, we worked up to walking around our small block.? I then set a goal for myself to be on a volleyball court in 4 months.? I stopped taking painkillers.

I did play volleyball 4 months later.? My health continued to improve.? I had setbacks over the next few years.? The worst setback was when I herniated 3 disks in my back playing volleyball and ended up, once again, in the hospital for a few weeks.? I just thought it was my typical back pain and kept playing.

The hard part was the immune-suppressing drugs.? I couldn?t tolerate methotrexate and was weak and nauseous all the time.? The doctor switched me to an injectable form of the drug.? I injected myself Friday so I could be sick all weekend and have a relatively normal work week.? I was tired all the time and I was starting to develop cellulite on my legs.? I went to my trainer for advice.? He asked me to watch a simple you-tube video called, ?Paleo in a Nutshell?.? It made total sense.

I have been Paleo now for 3 years.? My body fat is just over 12%.? My weight is 142 lbs (I am 5?10??) and has been steady for those 3 years.? I have so much energy.? I am 41 years old and just PR?d my ?Fran? time- 4:15.? I get stopped on the street and asked what my secret is.

Most importantly though, I have stopped taking immune suppressing drugs!? I went off them in December and I hope I never need them again.

A great thing happened about 2 weeks ago.? I was at Crossfit Orillia and had just finished a WOD.? The next class was starting to filter in and among them, one of my nurses from the hospital over 10 years ago.? ?Hi Kate,? I said.? ?Remember me??? There was a look of recognition and then utter shock.

?Oh my God Susan!? she exclaimed, ?You look so good- so healthy!?? She couldn?t believe the transformation.? ?I honestly thought you weren?t going to make it.?

I honestly thought I wasn?t going to either.? The Paleo diet was the key to my journey back to health.

Thanks for listening.

Susan

Trail mix: Seeking ways to connect 2 iconic routes

WEYBRIDGE, Vt. (AP) ? One of the longest hiking trails in the United States stops 40 miles short of its most famous cousin, but a group is trying to bridge that gap.

The North Country National Scenic Trail runs 4,600 miles from North Dakota to New York's eastern border. From there, it's about 40 miles across Vermont fields and mountains to the Appalachian Trail, the famous 2,170-mile hiking trail that runs from Georgia to Maine.

Seeking to bring them together now are a push from the organization that runs the North Country Trail; a changed attitude from officials in Vermont, where the connection was blocked decades ago; and a growing movement to connect the nation's longest hiking trails.

"This 40-mile gap is a gap in the system," said Bruce Matthews, executive director of the Michigan-based North Country Trail Association, which is working with the National Park Service, Vermont's Green Mountain Club and others to build the new connecting trail. "There's no logical reason for it."

Despite being the longest federally designated scenic hiking trail in the country, the North Country Trail isn't as well-known as others, partly because it's still a work in progress and partly because it has no defining feature, like the mountain range the Appalachian Trail is named for.

"With the North Country, it's more of an immersion in the people and how they have eked a living out of the hardships of the North Country than it is climbing from mountaintop to mountaintop," Matthews said.

The North Country Trail was one of 11 National Scenic Trails planned for decades and finally approved by Congress in 1980. On the map the trail is about 4,600 miles, but only about half is traditional hiking trail through rural areas. Much of it runs along roads. In many sections there aren't camping areas where hikers can use a lean-to or easily pitch a tent.

Thousands have hiked the entire Appalachian Trial. Just 11 people have completed the North Country Trail. Still, for those who know it, the trail and its paths meandering through farmland, the hills of New York's Finger Lakes region and canal towpaths are to be admired.

"All the criticism that this trail gets really are some of its strengths. It doesn't follow a particular geographic feature. It's not associated with one state. It's not associated with one ecosystem," said Joan Young, 64, of Scottville, Mich., who completed the trail in 2010. "Its strongest feature is the diversity of the experiences."

The North Country Trail is unlike many of the more traditional trails, said Matthews.

"In New England and the Appalachian region, there's a hiking culture there; there's an expectation that people hike it and do know about it," Matthews said.

"The further into the Midwest you get, there's more of a love affair with the internal combustion engine."

A 6,800-mile route called the American Discovery Trail stretches across the continent from Delaware to California, but it's pieced together from a patchwork of smaller trails and roads.

The route to extend the North Country Trail through Vermont hasn't been chosen, but it's expected to be about a 40-mile path that will hook up with the state's Long Trail, which is the same path as the Appalachian Trail at that point.

It could be years before the shield-shaped markers used by the North Country Trail start sprouting in the fields of Vermont's agricultural heartland.

In the mid-1970s when the North Country Trail was being planned, Vermont officials objected to it coming into the state over concerns additional hiker traffic could overwhelm the state's 273-mile Long Trail, which runs from Massachusetts to Canada. So the North Country Trail ended on the shore of Lake Champlain at the base of the bridge between Crown Point and West Addison.

The National Park Service is doing a feasibility study, which must be completed before the plan can be presented to Congress. Matthews said he was hopeful the Park Service approval can be finished this summer.

"It's one of those labors of love," Matthews said. "It's a simple foot path, yet it connects all the peoples of the north country and their combined experiences. You set foot on the trail in New York, you're connected with somebody in Minnesota."

Tropical Storm Debby drenches Florida

MIAMI (AP) ? Tropical Storm Debby spun drenching rains Monday over northern Florida as it hung nearly stationary over the Gulf of Mexico, making its biggest threat flooding rather than winds.

Tropical storm warnings were in effect along the Florida Panhandle as the storm parked offshore. Yet even with the storm's center far from land, it lashed Florida with heavy rains and spawned isolated tornadoes that killed at least one person.

And in Alabama, crews planned to continue searching for a South Carolina man who disappeared in rough surf Sunday afternoon. The man, whose name and hometown were not immediately released, was vacationing with his family when he went underwater around 1:45 p.m. Sunday, said Melvin Shepherd, director of beach safety for Orange Beach, Ala.

The storm also prompted the closing of a bridge to St. George Island, popular vacation island in Florida.

Residents in several counties near the crook of Florida's elbow were urged to leave low-lying neighborhoods because of the threat of flooding. High winds forced the closure of an interstate bridge that spans Tampa Bay and links St. Petersburg with areas to the southeast. In several locations, homes and businesses were damaged by high winds authorities believe were from tornadoes.

Authorities in the Tampa Bay area were asking residents and tourists to stay away from flooded streets. Some streets were still under water early Monday, while others were blocked with debris.

The constant barrage of wind and rain triggered fears of the widespread flooding that occurred across the Florida Panhandle during Hurricane Dennis in 2005. Officials on Monday said the main bridge to St. George Island was closed as the storm loomed. Power was already out on the island and authorities said it could be out for days.

As of 8 a.m. EDT Monday, Debby's center was essentially stationary about 90 miles (145 kilometers) south-southwest of Apalachicola, Fla. Debby's top sustained winds were around 50 mph (85 kph) with little change in strength expected over the next day or so. The forecast map indicated the storm could inch forward through the week, eventually coming ashore over the Panhandle. However, a storm's path is difficult to discern days in advance.

Underscoring the unpredictable nature of tropical storms, forecasters discontinued a tropical storm warning Sunday afternoon for Louisiana after forecast models indicated Debby wasn't likely to turn west. At one point, forecasters expected the storm to come ashore in that state.

"There are always going to be errors in making predictions. There is never going to be a perfect forecast," said Chris Landsea, a meteorologist at the National Hurricane Center.

A major concern will be flooding from heavy rainfall. The storm is moving slowly, allowing its clouds more time to unload rain. A public advisory said parts of northern Florida could get 10 to 15 inches of rain, with some areas getting as much as 25 inches.

The Highlands County Sheriff's Office said in a news release that several tornadoes moved through the area southeast of Tampa, damaging homes.

Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Nell Hays said a woman was found dead in a house in Venus that was destroyed in the storm. A child found in the same house was taken to the hospital. No further information was available on the child's condition or either person's age.

Authorities urged residents to leave low-lying neighborhoods in Franklin, Taylor and Wakulla counties because of flooding. Shelters were open in the area.

Wind tore the roof off a marina in St. Pete Beach, and a pier was heavily damaged, said Tom Iovino, a Pinellas County government spokesman. He said no injuries were reported.

As of Sunday, 23 percent of oil and gas production in the region had been suspended, according to a government hurricane response team. Employees have been evacuated from 13 drilling rigs and 61 production platforms in the Gulf of Mexico.

The storm was not expected to result in higher oil and gas prices.

"It's largely a non-event for oil," said Tom Kloza, chief oil analyst at the Oil Price Information Service.

Lyme disease is caused by the bacterial spirochete B. burgdorferi, which is transmitted to humans through tick bites. The disease typically begins with a skin rash and is followed by fever, joint pain, and other flu-like symptoms. If diagnosed early, Lyme disease can be successfully treated with antibiotics; however, up to 25% of patients experience arthritis-like symptoms after treatment. The cause of this condition, termed antibiotic refractory Lyme arthritis, is currently unknown. In the current issue of the JCI, researchers led by Dr. Linda Bockenstedt at Yale University reported on a fluorescent form of B. burgdorferi spirochetes used to determine what happens to the bacteria during and after antibiotic treatment. Using a special type of microscopy to examine the joints and cartilage in living mice, the researchers found that the number of spirochetes diminished quickly during antibiotic treatment and that live spirochetes were entirely eradicated by the time the treatment was completed. Despite being unable to detect live spirochetes after treatment, the researchers detected a fluorescent signal in the joints of the infected mice, which they attributed to bacterial debris. This debris could not cause an infection, but was still be detected by antibodies and elicited an inflammatory immune response. In a related commentary, Alan Barbour of the University of California Irvine notes the important ramifications of discovering non-viable and non-transmissible bacterial remnants following antibiotic treatment and the implications for antibiotic-refractory Lyme arthritis. Further studies will be required to determine if B. burgdorferi debris can cause arthritis in humans, as mice do not develop chronic Lyme arthritis.

England, Italy exceeding expectations

KRAKOW, Poland (AP) -Italy is restoring pride in a tarnished national game while England is shaking off past inhibitions.

The European Championship is turning out better than expected for the English and Italians, who meet on Sunday in the quarterfinals.

The Italians are providing a welcome distraction from another match-fixing scandal at home after setting out in the tournament under siege from fans - and the police.

England also entered Euro 2012 at a low ebb after a hastily appointed new coach was given the task of putting together a team which could just compete credibly.

But they've already managed to register a first competitive victory over Sweden and triumph over the host of a European Championship when they beat Ukraine to advance as group winners.

In Kiev on Sunday, England's task will be to chalk up a more significant first - beating a major footballing power in the knockout rounds of a tournament away from home soil.

Not surprisingly, coach Roy Hodgson believes that victory would give England "a bit of an extra glow.

"It would put one of those nasty statistics for a team of England's stature to rest," he said.

Previous knockout victories outside England have been restricted to the World Cups against Paraguay (1986), Belgium and Cameroon (1990), Denmark (2002) and Ecuador (2006).

England's last meeting with Italy in a tournament saw the hosts win the third-place match at the 1990 World Cup. Italy also defeated England 1-0 in the Euro 1980 group stage.

While England is battling the weight of history, the Azzurri are progressing at Euro 2012 despite Italian football being immersed in police investigations. It's not unfamiliar territory for the Italians, who won the 2006 World Cup after a domestic footballing scandal.

Defender Leonardo Bonucci remains in the squad despite being investigated for allegedly helping fix matches while he played for Bari in Serie B in 2009-10.

Keeping the Euro 2012 run going is helping to restore some pride in Italian football, though the side plays down the trouble back home.

"We don't really take it as extra motivation - this team always has great professionals and great players," midfielder Daniele De Rossi said. "It's just a characteristic that Italians carry. Overcoming difficulties is in our DNA."

Pride appears to have been restored in the England team for very different reasons.

Fabio Capello's sudden resignation in February threw the side's Euro 2012 plans into turmoil. But like Italy, the English progressed through the group stage unbeaten and even the public back home appears to be falling back in love with the team.

"There's definitely a spirit there," midfielder Scott Parker said. "People say spirit doesn't win you tournaments, but ... ultimately, that's our base. I'd like to think we have that base back."

"Trust me," he added. "It goes a very long way. You don't want to be surrounded by negativity, or reading things that aren't nice about yourselves or the team."

The team has been immersed in Italian influences since 2008 due to Capello.

And the man set to lead the Italian strike force is also very familiar to them: Manchester City's Mario Balotelli.

England players will also know just how easily the hotheaded striker is prone to losing his cool on the pitch. So will they try to rattle him?

"I'm too much the purist coach to go along that line ... I'm sure if he misbehaves they'll have a word in his ear," Hodgson said.

Wayne Rooney up front for England is every bit as prone to allowing his fiery side to boil over. After all, he was forced to sit out the first two group stage matches after being suspended for kicking an opponent in the last qualifier.

But Italy captain Gianluigi Buffon said: "He's the driving force of their team."

To stifle Italy's flair, Hodgson has stressed the need to remained disciplined just like in the previous five unbeaten matches since he took charge.

"The particular challenge with Italy is in the midfield area where they have a lot of very gifted and experienced players," Hodgson said. "Players who are technically good on the ball."

Steven Gerrard and Scott Parker could have a busy night in the Ukrainian capital shackling Andrea Pirlo, the passing and set piece maestro.

"We'll make certain the wide players won't get themselves too wide to leave gaps to the side of our central midfield players, and one of the two front players will drop a bit deeper to avoid the two central ones being dragged forward," said Hodgson, who worked with Pirlo at Inter Milan.

While England has no injury problems, Italy on Sunday could sorely miss top defender Giorgio Chiellini, whose tournament could be over due to a leg injury.

That isn't concerning another defender, Leonardo Bonucci, too much.

"From the play shown thus far we can say that Italy is stronger than England," he said. "But other factors come into play on the pitch, such as ruthlessness and the desire to win, which we don't lack."
