COMMENTARY | The Susan G. Komen Foundation has slashed funding for Planned Parenthood to provide preventative breast cancer exams to low-income women.
None of this funding involves abortions, but apparently for anti-abortionists, who consider abortion to be "murder," it is not murder to have a woman die of breast cancer because she could not afford a mammogram.
Things have become so terrible that a person can't wear a Komen pink shirt or hair ribbon, can't participate in a Komen community run or walk-a-thon, and can't even attend a Komen school event where the kids are pink-clad to raise funds, without it being political.
Planned Parenthood, which does not advocate abortion but counsels clients that abortion is a legal option, ratified by the U.S. Supreme Court, will survive and possibly even thrive. Direct donations, mainly from passionate progressives and feminists, started to pour into Planned Parenthood's coffers as soon as news broke regarding the Komen for a Cure cutoff. Meanwhile, the Komen Foundation will be losing bucks from liberals but will be getting more bucks from social conservatives.
Komen Foundation representatives tried to explain that they are "protecting" donors' money by disbanding funds for agencies that are "under federal investigation." Planned Parenthood is "under investigation" by social anti-abortion conservatives in Congress. This has nothing to do with honesty in dealing with dollars, which makes the Komen Foundation argument seem quite bogus.
Let me make it clear that personally I am totally opposed to abortion. I abhor abortion. But that's just my view, which I won't impose on others. So I suppose that makes me pro-choice, an enabler of "murder."
This can be so confusing. Why do "pro-lifers" oppose support programs once the baby lives, ranging from Head Start to adult breast-cancer screenings? Either they're hypocrites or totally stupid.
Whatever. I'm wondering what Susan Goodman Komen, who died of breast cancer in 1980 at a too-young age of 36, soothed by sister's Nancy Goodman Brinker's pledge to pursue a cure, would think of all this nonsense.
